For over 25 years Discount Lighting has been committed to providing high-quality light fittings at warehouse prices. However we are also committed to reducing our carbon footprint and minimising our environmental impact.
We believe that every business has a responsibility to take action towards sustainability, especially at this critical time when our planet is facing unprecedented environmental challenges.
We are taking several steps to reduce our carbon footprint, and our goal is to be 100% carbon neutral by 2025.
Below is a summary of the steps we have taken or are in the process of implementing right now, however we know we need to do more and will update this page as we announce more changes on our journey to net zero.
1) Phasing Out Incandescent and Halogen Globes and non-LED compatible light fittings
We are phasing out all non-LED light globes and light fittings which are not compatible with LED light bulbs. We are also encouraging our suppliers to do the same, and we are proud to say that over 90% of our lightbulbs and light fittings are currently LED or LED-compatible, and we will be 100% LED by August 2023.
2) Carbon Neutral Delivery
We are also taking steps to provide carbon-neutral delivery by offsetting the emissions of customer deliveries with a carbon offset partner and/or using carbon-neutral delivery services. We believe that it is our responsibility to ensure that our products are delivered to our customers in a way that is environmentally responsible.
3) Solar Powered Office and Warehouse
Discount Lighting is also proud to have a solar-powered office and warehouse with battery backup, which covers over 95% of our energy use.
4) Reduced Freight Emissions by Dispatching Directly from Our Suppliers
We have also started dispatching orders directly from our suppliers when they are closer to our customer or where it would result in additional freight to send to us first and then forward on to our customer. This helps us to reduce our carbon emissions and minimize our environmental impact.
5) Reusing Packaging and Reducing Packaging Waste
In addition to these initiatives, we are also committed to reusing packaging materials and have gone paperless by conducting all customer and supplier communication electronically. We have also asked suppliers not to send us new hard copy catalogues.
6) Sustainable Materials, Natural Fibres and Recycled Plastics
We are also adding more products to our range that are created using sustainable materials, recycled plastics, or natural fibers such as bamboo, wood, cane, and rattan. We believe that these products are not only better for the environment, but they are also high-quality, stylish, and affordable.
7) Sustainable Website Hosting
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are also proud to partner with Shopify, who are committed to spending a minimum of $5M annually on the most promising, impactful technologies and projects fighting climate change globally as part of their sustainability fund.
How we can (& will) do more - our journey to carbon neutral by 2025
We recognise that there is always more that can be done, and we are continually looking for ways to improve our sustainability initiatives. We are committed to adding more initiatives over the coming years to significantly reduce our carbon footprint, with the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2025.
We are proud to take significant steps to reduce our carbon footprint and minimise our environmental impact. We encourage our customers to join us in this effort by choosing sustainable lighting solutions and supporting environmentally responsible businesses. Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and help to tackle climate change.
