What is the rule for ceiling lights?

There’s no single rule for choosing ceiling lights, but a helpful guide is to match the fitting to the size and height of the room, so the light spreads evenly. Bigger rooms generally need a wider fixture or more than one light to avoid uneven patches, especially in open living spaces. Low ceilings usually suit flush or semi-flush fittings because they sit closer to the surface and don’t intrude into the room.

How do I know what ceiling light to buy?
